Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Ideas for Your Old Pillowcases

A Book Bag Made from an Old PillowcaseWhen you replace your worn-out household linens, you might wonder what to do with your old ones. Instead of throwing them out, you can repurpose your old pillowcases into something useful! There are so many creative ways to reuse old pillowcases around your North Austin rental home. Here are some ideas to inspire some creativity of your own!

Floor cushion. Pillowcases make comfortable floor pillows or chairs! Simply sew three or four pillowcases together along the long edges, stuff with pillows or other filler, and sew closed. These cushions make sleepovers even more fun and are also great for your game room or reading nook!

Dog bed. Old pillowcases make great covers for dog beds, too! Dog beds can look old and really worn out over time. These old pillowcases can become a pretty dog bed cover that you can remove and wash. Or, why not go ahead and make a new dog bed by putting new stuffing into an old pillowcase? Doing either of these is a great way to save money!

Apron. Older linens usually have pretty patterns that look cute on wearables, like an apron. Being both fun and functional, the fabric of a pillowcase can be cut and sewn into a cute apron you can use again and again. Pick and choose from the many different sizes and styles of aprons!

Laundry bag. The shape of a pillowcase makes it ideal for many creative uses. You can turn any old pillowcase into a laundry bag. You can do this by just adding a drawstring around the top opening. You’ll just need to fold the top edge over, sew, and then thread a cord through. This pillowcase laundry bag is perfect for traveling or for small spaces.

Reusable shopping bag. If you have a few extra minutes to spare, you can transform that old pillowcase into a cute, reusable shopping bag. Although it involves a bit more cutting and sewing to make the handles, it is nothing anyone handy with a needle can’t do.

Chair Covers. Another easy upcycle for old pillowcases is to make decorative chair covers for your home. A set of vintage or decorative pillowcases with a pretty pattern would be perfect for this. Simply slip them over the backs of chairs to transform your room. Tie a ribbon or cord around the chair back to secure the covers in place and you’re good to go.

Book tote. You can also use that old pillowcase to help you carry your books. In just a few hours, you can make an easy and cute book tote. You will need to cut strips from the top part of the pillowcase and sew them into handles. Your fun and the functional tote are now ready to tag along with you anywhere you go.

Dress or cute top. Finally, what could be sweeter than a favorite pillowcase turned into a child’s dress or summer top? There are many available patterns for a simple dress, skirt, or top that will be perfect to wear on warm summer days.
